Our storytelling segment returns to another idea drawn from The Art of The Last Jedi. Although conventional wisdom suggests that The Force Awakens leaned too heavily on nostalgia and the story structure of A New Hope while The Last Jedi took more risks and broke new ground, we use Episode VIII’s dramatic under-performing at the Chinese box office as an angle to discuss the ways The Last Jedi, and particularly its use of Luke Skywalker, may have relied too much on nostalgia and the expense of the new characters.

The world-building segment considers the balance that every new Star Wars movie must strike in the new era of annual film releases: the balance between tapping into the power of fans’ nostalgia for the Star Wars stories already told and the need to tell a story that stands on its own within the franchise. The book is filled with a wide variety of intriguing concept art from the film’s production, and its prose provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Johnson’s story came together. The lens for our discussion is the book The Art of The Last Jedi by Phil Szostak, published the same day as the movie’s release with a foreword by Rian Johnson. This time, we have the opportunity to lift the veil after the fact and examine the creative process behind The Last Jedi after the fact.

Essentially the writers of the movie shutting down any debate as to why it never appears again. Fans and characters in the movie have asked why this move hasn’t been used again, and in Rise Of The Skywalker, Fin remarks that it’s a “one in a million” move. This move was a suicidal endeavor by Holdo, but it bought the surviving Resistance members in her, now evacuated crew, enough time to escape to a nearby planet.
What happened was Holdo's ship was instantly vaporized at the moment of collision, with the energy of the impact at the point of transition from real space shattering the Supremacy, blowing it in half and blasting apart several Star Destroyers behind it and docked within the gargantuan ship. A unique usage of a hyperdrive engine that we sadly haven’t seen much of a reappearance of outside a very brief shot of a heavy freighter destroying a Star Destroyer above Endor in Rise of Skywalker.įor those not aware, The Holdo Maneuver was a tactic used by Resistance leader Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo in The Last Jedi and essentially involved ramming the Empire cruiser Supremacy with the Resistance ship the Raddus whilst the hyperdrive was engaged. Say what you want about The Last Jedi, but it did bring us the screen blasting CGI spectacular that was the Holdo Maneuver.
